What are the standards for Ball Screws? Are there any official standards?

General ball screw standards include the international ISO standard, and national standards include the JIS standard (Japan), DIN standard (Germany), and ANSI standard (United States).

ISO:International Organization for Standardization
JIS:Japanese Industrial Standards
DIN:Deutsche Industrie Normen
ANSI:American National Standards Institute

The ball screw standard in Japan began with the establishment of JIS B 1191: Ball Screw in 1967 (Showa 42). In 1977 (Showa 52), JIS B 1191 was revised to General Ball Screw, and JIS B1192: Precision Ball Screw was newly established. It was then revised again in 1987 (Showa 62), and the following content was added:

  • Numerical consistency with ISO was achieved regarding the combination of nominal outer diameter and nominal lead of the screw shaft and runout tolerance.
  • A new accuracy class "C0" has been established for precision Ball Screws.
  • Defined as the variation per revolution instead of the wobble of the screw lead accuracy.
  • The meanings of the terms reference torque, preload dynamic torque, and preload have been decided, and their measurement methods, measurement conditions, and torque fluctuation rate values, etc. have been specified.

Currently, the standard in use is the unified JIS B 1192 (revised in 1997) that was created by integrating JIS B 1191 and JIS B 1192.

The JIS specifies definitions of terms, types and grades, combinations of shaft diameter and lead, lead accuracy, mounting accuracy of each part of the screw shaft and nut, quality-related accuracy such as the allowable range of standard torque fluctuation rate, materials for the screw shaft and nut, manufacturer name, serial number, etc.
It does not specify the shape of the screw shaft (including the terminal shape), nut shape, circulation method, or screw groove shape, and these specifications are left to the discretion of each manufacturer.

<Reference: About JIS>
JIS is an acronym for Japanese Industrial Standards, and is one of the national standards known as the "Japan Industrial Standards." Classification is done by standard number, with B for general machinery, D for automobiles, E for railways, etc. Ball Screws are classified as general machinery, so JIS B 1192 is the standard number.
Unless otherwise specified by law, JIS is treated as a voluntary standard, and the use or sale of products that do not comply with JIS is not prohibited.
